“Is It Weird to Hire a Male Photographer? (Asking for a Friend.)”
Let’s just address the XY chromosome in the room.
If you’ve spent any time browsing photographers here in Southern Oklahoma — or really, most places — you might’ve noticed a trend: most of them are women. From maternity to weddings to family photos, lady photographers are absolutely crushing the game, and rightfully so.
So where does that leave me? A bearded dad of four who owns more camera accessories than pairs of jeans?
It leaves me exactly where I want to be — behind the lens, wrangling your family into gorgeous light, and making magic happen.
But if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is it weird to hire a male photographer?” or “Can a guy really capture sweet, emotional, Pinterest-worthy moments?” — allow me to answer:
Nope, it’s not weird.
And, yes, a dude can capture the sweet and emotional moments.
And I’ve got jokes and dad reflexes to prove it.
So... why should you hire a male photographer?
1. Dad Energy = Chaos Whisperer
As a dad of four, I’ve seen it all: blowouts, meltdowns, sticky snacks, sibling squabbles, bribes that escalated into full-scale negotiations. If your kid decides they’re over it before we’ve even parked the car? I’ve been there. I live there.
I don’t flinch when a toddler throws a shoe or when someone shouts “I need to potty RIGHT NOW.” I roll with it. I’ve got dad jokes locked and loaded, a calm presence, and a solid “don’t worry, we’ll get the shot” energy.
2. Different Eyes See Different Things
Male and female photographers often bring different perspectives — and that’s a good thing! My goal isn’t to recreate what someone else is doing. It’s to tell your story with my point of view: thoughtful, grounded, genuine, and relaxed.
Sometimes that means catching dad looking like an absolute hero while he holds the diaper bag like a boss. Sometimes it means capturing the quiet, unscripted moments in between the poses — the real-life stuff. The moments that feel like your family.
3. We Don’t All Need to Match, We Just Need to Click
When hiring a photographer, gender isn’t nearly as important as connection and trust. Do you like my work? Do you like my vibe? Can you picture yourself or your kids laughing during a shoot with me?
That’s what really matters.
And look — I’m not showing up in cargo shorts and wraparound shades with a Bluetooth earpiece. I’m showing up with a camera, a game plan, and a laid-back attitude. I care about lighting, lens choice, and making sure you look amazing. I also know how to wrangle a group without raising my voice (dad skill #47).
4. We’re Not Just Button Pushers
Hiring a professional (male or female) isn’t just about owning a fancy camera. It’s about understanding composition, light, posing, and editing. It’s about capturing emotion, not just expression. It’s about building a relationship and storytelling.
So while it might be more common to see women behind the camera in some photography spaces — especially here in small-town Oklahoma — don’t let that keep you from choosing someone whose work speaks to you.
Even if he also knows the lyrics to Encanto and secretly enjoys watching Fixer Upper reruns with his wife. (Again, asking for a friend.)
TL;DR?
Hiring a male photographer isn’t weird.
Hiring someone who gets your family, knows how to create art out of chaos, and makes the session feel effortless? That’s just smart.
