Sportraits: Not Your Typical Sports Picture
The Lil Sluggers were a ton of fun to work with! This composite team photo was done in Adobe Photoshop. Effective, high quality composite shots REQUIRE standardized, dynamic lighting, a keen vision, and software (Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop)
Let’s get something straight — we’ve all seen those traditional sports pictures. You know the ones. Unorganized and messy. Inconsistent editing and final results. Forced smiles. Flash so harsh it could ignite Oklahoma’s already-toasted grass. The same three poses for every kid, every team, every year. Don’t get me wrong — there’s value in documenting the uniform and the season. But if we’re being honest? They’re forgettable.
That’s where Sportraits come in.
A “Sportrait” is short for sports portrait, but it’s more than just a clever mash-up of words. It’s about capturing an athlete’s personality, passion, and presence — with intention. These are stylized, creative, cinematic portraits that celebrate what makes your sport yours. Sweat, grit, swagger, joy — whatever your game is, a good sportrait reflects you.
We love working with teams — big or small, t-ball to varsity. Baseball, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling — whatever the sport, we’re all in. We bring energy, organization, and creativity to every session, capturing the classic team and individual shots you expect plus the bold, modern images that make parents and players say, “Whoa.” We also specialize in composite team portraits — a dynamic, clean way to showcase the entire team with style and precision. It’s team photography, reimagined.
So What Makes a Sportrait Different?
Utilizing off-camera flash is a sure-fire way to nail back-lit shots like this!
Lighting. Composition. Mood. Story.
We bring in off-camera lighting, dramatic angles, and storytelling techniques that elevate the shot from “pose-and-smile” to “frame-this-on-the-wall.” Think stadium lighting after dark, dusty gym floors with light streaks cutting through the air, or moody skies before kickoff. It's not just a photo of you playing — it's a photo about who you are as an athlete.
We tailor every sportrait session to fit the individual. Quarterbacks don’t need the same energy as cross-country runners. Cheer captains and wrestlers shouldn’t be edited the same way. Your sport, your energy, your session.
Who’s It For?
Anyone who wants something more than cookie-cutter.
Teams who want unique, modern, and just plain cool individual and team photos.
High school athletes who want their sport represented artistically.
Underclassmen wanting to stand out from the standard team photo crowd.
Parents who know their kids are putting in the hours and want to document this season of life with something that actually does it justice — we can work with whole teams, or individual athletes.
What to Expect
A Sportrait session is laid-back but intentional. We’ll chat about your sport, the vibe you want, and scout a location that fits. I’ll show you a few ideas, we’ll test some light, and then the fun begins. Most sessions last about 30–45 minutes. You don’t have to be a model. You just have to show up — I’ll guide the rest.
Spoiler alert: I’ll probably geek out over the lighting. I might even show you the back of the camera mid-shoot just to prove we’re making magic. That’s just how I operate.
Side Note for fellow Photogs:
Every time you shoot a team for Sportraits, you’re not just working with kids — you’re meeting families you’ve likely never photographed before. That’s a golden opportunity to build relationships and cross-pollinate your photography services. Kids don’t stay T-ballers forever; they turn into seniors, grads, newlyweds, and parents themselves.
So treat every sports session like a try-out for the future. If they love working with you now, odds are they’ll come back for anniversaries, engagements, graduations, weddings, and milestones down the road.
The key? Make it a blast. Crack jokes, get them laughing, make the session an experience — not just a photo op. Sure, families want incredible photos… but they also want to remember having a good time making them. Give them both, and you’ll be the photographer they call again and again.
