What to Expect at Your First Photography Session
Many people are unfamiliar with the professional photography experience. I’m always surprised by how many clients have never booked a photographer before—not for milestones, engagements, birthdays, or portraits. Nothing. Zero. Zilch.
“If this is your first session ... , don’t stress. Ask all the questions. Really—all of them.”
Josh’s first time with a professional photographer. Thankfully, my awkward charm and 200mg of caffeine worked their magic
For the longest time, we were in that same camp. Most of our early family portraits were taken by well-meaning relatives armed with Christmas-present cameras—usually set to Auto Mode and pointed in our general direction. No one thought much about composition, focus, or the exposure triangle (ISO, shutter speed, aperture). And while those photos have their charm, they weren’t professional.
That’s the difference a professional brings. Planning, understanding light, reading people, and thoughtful editing afterward—these are the secret ingredients that turn everyday snapshots into heirloom-quality portraits.
If this is your first session with Laughlin Photography (or any pro), don’t stress. Ask all the questions. Really—all of them. We’re never too busy to help you feel confident and comfortable going into your shoot.
I do everything I can to help you feel at ease. That starts with clear communication beforehand and continues with a healthy dose of personality throughout the session. The last thing anyone needs is a cold, distant photographer.
And just between us—I usually down an energy drink about an hour before go-time. It helps me break the ice, stay sharp, and build a great connection with you from the first shutter click to the last. I’ll probably geek out a little during your session and share a few “back-of-the-camera” shots as we go. Mostly because I want to affirm and ease any fears or insecurities you might have. It’s my job to make you feel good about the process and even better about the results.
